Cricket as Career in India

Cricket as Career in India

Parents always start planning & discussing about the career of their kids even when a kid is yet to be born. The most favorite career options have always been a doctor, an engineer, an IAS officer, a teacher, a lawyer or a business heir for business owners. Sports used to be rarely in the favorite list of parents and were important only to keep up the good health for their kids. Though cricket is considered a religion in India yet hardly any parents would focus on it as a career for their kids’ in earlier times. Kids were allowed to play cricket (restrictive) but not at the cost of their education. But scenario has changes especially in last one decade.

Reason - Ever Growing Popularity of Cricket in India

Today cricket is being pursued as a hot favorite career option. Cricket as career in India now means big fat money, tremendous fame, celebrity tag, recognition at international level and big fan following. These all things have attracted people towards choosing cricket as professional career. Moreover the official national cricket body, BCCI, the richest board of cricket in the world, has really toiled down the path to make cricket as leading sports in India.

Though the careers span of a cricketer is limited, maximum up to 40-42 years but in that time he will be able to earn sufficient money plus there are many options to choose from after retirement which are –

  •    to become a coach
  •   to become a cricket expert over any media
  •   to open up own cricket academy
  •  to work as a commentator
  •  to work as an umpire
  • to work as a mentor for a team

Moreover the advent of IPL and other domestic county cricket clubs have provided a firm foundation for cricketers to be financially quite strong as so to start other business ventures before or after their retirement.
Though competition is extremely tough but the struggle is worth the benefits and that is why it is apt to say cricket as career in India today is the much loved one.
